Swansea University - Student View
Located in Singleton Park and very picturesque. All facilities on campus except some nursing courses (20 min walk).
5 halls of residence: 3 tower blocks on campus (breakfast only) and 2 traditional halls 20 min walk (with meals). Self-catering at Hendrefoelan student village; good facilities eg shop, bar, launderette, tennis courts, car park; 30 mins' walk but frequent bus service and SU minibus. Private accommodation reasonable and most quite close.
Many overseas and mature students - the mixed backgrounds reflected in a relaxed atmosphere.
SU very active, including excellent welfare service, nursery, counselling service, sabbatical women's officer and overseas officer. Union services include shops, bars, diners, launderettes, coffee bar, copy shop, travel office. Over 100 societies, various political groups, green action, community action, women's group, macabre etc, as well as rag and a huge athletics union (50 clubs, 3000 members). Ents programme wide and varied.
Semi-student city, very friendly - plenty of pubs, clubs, cinemas and theatres, outdoor and indoor markets. Gower Peninsula and good beaches nearby for walks, surfing, rock-climbing etc.
Quite easy to change course in first year as often made up of three subjects. Year abroad possible on many courses (eg languages, American Studies, engineering, history, politics) and sandwich courses in several departments (eg engineering and chemistry); some sponsorship available too. Work assessed differently from course to course (course work modules, single or split finals). Work rate reasonable. Quality of degree, generally excellent.
