Founded: 1893, originally bringing together three existing colleges at Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff. Structural features: A federal university. It consists of ten member institutions:

- Lampeter (University of Wales, Lampeter)
- Newport (University of Wales, Newport)
- North East Wales Institute (of Higher Education)
- Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama

- Swansea University
- Trinity College, Carmarthen
- UWIC (University of Wales Institute, Cardiff)
Cardiff University, one of the founding institutions, is an affiliated institution. Teaching, academic appointments and the selection of students are all the responsibility of the individual institutions. You can look up each of these institutions separately.
Length of courses: 3 or 4 years: 4-6 for medicine, 5 for dentistry.
