Bangor University - Student View

On the banks of the Menai Straits and the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, it is one of the most beautiful university locations and surprisingly easy to reach - via A55 or by train (3h hours from London).

All the university buildings are within the small but bustling city, apart from the Normal Site (a mile out) and ocean sciences (a 3-mile bus ride away).

Strong in all areas, notably psychology, welsh and ocean sciences. Large number of mature and international students. Student life is pleasant and relatively cheap.

University guarantees halls accommodation to all first years and many others; private housing is readily available and fairly cheap (although can be dubious quality, so look early to avoid living like The Young Ones!).

City centre has longest high street in Wales, with a few national chains and many local shops. Upper Bangor is teeming with students, the main arts building and a plethora of takeaways and pubs.

SU catering offers all types of food, from salads to greasy fry-ups, and a number of cheap cafes and restaurants in town.

Nightlife revolves around the SU: Amser/Time nightclub (biggest in north Wales) and Union Main Bar hold numerous weekly events, all types of music (legendary 60s, 70s & 80s, drum'n'bass, funk, chart, dance, transient, world music), live gigs and drinks promotions. Only one other club (The Octagon) which holds cheesy and sleazy student party nights; but made up for by number of pubs - 39 in walking distance, so pub crawls incredible.

For the more cultured, the local theatre offers ballet, welsh language opera and minority interest films; choral and orchestral concerts in university hall; 2-screen cinema in Bangor shows new releases (eventually).

Obvious place for outdoor pursuits, such as mountain walking in Snowdonia, climbing, surfing the deserted beaches of Anglesey and sailing in the Menai Straits. Over 40 sports clubs, ranging from football to ki akido and octopush.

Many cultural, religious and dramatic clubs, plus obligatory drinking society. Thriving community action group, a lively campaigns team and active LGB society.

The Welsh Union (UMCB) upholds union bilingual policy, reinforces the rights of welsh students and runs Club Cymru welsh language event. The welfare department oversees the student-run Nightline. Although not particularly political, the SU is active in campaigning for students' rights and welcomes involvement of any student.
