Huddersfield University - Student Life
Housing: University no longer runs its own halls of residence but several privately owned halls (but rents high by local standards). For other accommodation, check out The Examiner, uni accommodation service, SU student advice office.
Eats: SU coffee bar (meal from £1.50); Blue Rooms (vegetarian meal for £10), O'Neills (£5). The New Wharf, Nawaab (£15) and more food emporiums than you could get through in 3 years.
Drink: Lager £1.25 in SU (£1 on Wednesdays!). The Parish Pump, Courthouse, the Warehouse and Foyer are also cheap and friendly; The Vulcan does meal and a pint for £3. Some pubs best avoided.
Nightlife: World famous Contemporary Music Festival. Plush UCI multiplex cinema (student discounts). Most clubs have weekly student nights - Camel Club, Visage, Heaven & Hell, Club-Non. SU variety of events - big screen sports action, theme nights, charity nights, pub to club nights, quizzes, and various promotions. Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield have big bands and gigs.
Locals: Mainly friendly and welcoming.
Sports: University sports centre and good community sports centres, pools, etc.
Travel: Good public transport. SU safety bus takes students home for 50p.
Financial help: SU can give advice about hardship funds.
Jobs: Students employed in SU (bars, support, driving safety bus, publicity and events team, technical staff).
Informal name: Hudds Uni.
Best features: Friendly and welcoming.
And worst: It rains - all the time!
Good news: SU expanding into a new building, with much better facilities.
Bad news: Lots of distractions!
