Sunderland University - Student View
In an expanding city centre, it's split on three campuses - Chester Road, Langham and St Peter's. All buildings are within 25 minutes' walk of each other but a free campus bus service helps to save those legs.
Cosmopolitan mix of students; large number of mature and local people as well as national and international students from over 50 different countries.
Accommodation in 6 halls of residence and university-owned housing; privately owned accommodation in abundance.
Strong lecturing staff in all areas, particularly pharmacy, technology, engineering, fine arts, business studies and media studies. 4 libraries, two with 24-hour access (Chester Road. St Peter's), vast computer resources.
Active SU runs 2 shops and extremely cheap venues on 3 sites (each with food outlet): Wearmouth Bar on Chester Road (continental-style bar/cafe); The Bonded Warehouse next to Panns Bank; and a nightclub, Manor Quay, close to St Peter's campus.
Union supplies professional advice services for welfare and academic problems and runs its own Nightline. It also provides a shuttle bus service between the halls and the union bars, libraries and campuses; buses available for use by any of the 100+ clubs and societies (sporting, cultural) which the union supports.
Many local shops have student discounts and the cheaper cost of living in the north east is a definite bonus.
