Housing: Halls and uni head-tenancy scheme (university sublet private property to ensure standards). Some lodgings available for families. Look for private accommodation in DN Magazine (union's free paper); Hylton Road area very cheap.

Eats: Meal for £2.50+ on campus. Lots of pizza, kebab, Chinese, Indian and chip-shop takeaways. Good cheap local restaurants, predominantly Indian and Italian; few specialist veggie.

Drink: Union's bars cheapest (from £1 a bottle); offers throughout the year. Many good local pubs but city centre can be expensive.

Nightlife: Good SU ents, popular club nights with local and national bands. Local clubs very commercial; Manor Quay good for students (safe and friendly).

Sports: University sports facilities very cheap (gym £15 a year).

Locals: Fairly friendly, depending on where you go.

Travel: All sites in walking distance. Free campus bus and SU evening shuttle bus. Student passes available on Metro.

Financial help: Access fund, strict criteria.

Jobs: Union employs 150+ as eg ambassadors, catering, bar staff, drivers.

Best features: Friendly atmosphere.
