University College - Student Life
Housing: College accommodation for 2 years; costly but on a par with other colleges.
Eats: Cheap college food, incl veggie option; main course from £1.50. Loads of places in High Street (fairly expensive, except multitude of kebab vans, Including the famous, Univ-based Ahmeds).
Drink: College bar excellent (£1.60+ a pint); other college bars cheap. Popular pubs eg, Hobgoblin. Chequers, Wheatsheaf, the Turf, Far From the Madding Crowd. Nightlife: College ents cheap and frequent; Union Society club Purple Turtle a popular Univ haunt, lots of new bands playing Oxford; good cinemas.
Locals: Generally friendly. Sports: Free facilities including sports ground and boathouse; squash court on site, and free use of state-of-the-art-gym just across the bridge at Magdalen College School.
Travel: Various college travel grants, including several summer travel scholarships (£5000) and Keasbey Bursary fund for student travel.
Financial help: Some £35,000 allocated by JCR each year; also several college funds and interest-free loans.
Jobs: In college bar and dining hall (free food - excellent fringe benefit), plenty jobs going about town, although it is requested by tutors that these are not sought. Most go home to work in vacations.
Informal name: Univ.
Best features: Inclusive community with friendly and diverse atmosphere.
And worst: Shelley Memorial.
