St Anne's - Student View
A big college with big ambitions as the number of projects recently taken on demonstrates. It encourages academic excellence while retaining its friendly, welcoming and supportive atmosphere. The modern architecture, while not as traditionally aesthetic as some other colleges, nevertheless means that it is not at all intimidating and helps to create a relaxed and informal environment.
Large size means there are loads of people to get to know and it is far from claustrophobic. Its location, just outside the busy town centre, creates a real sense of community and many students base their social life there. There is also great diversity in students' backgrounds, hailing from all over the country and the world. It has almost the highest proportion of state school students of all the colleges and access schemes are particularly active.
College rooms are generally good and, with the large new building, all students will be able to live in college for the duration of their course. Internet connections in all college rooms, plus a good 24-hour computer room and a scheme for buying cheap computers from college. Well-stocked library (open till 2 am). Food is good and cheap and there is Formal Hall four times a term to which it is possible to bring guest.
College bar is very popular (and cheap) and a good place for meeting friends for a quiet (or not so quiet) drink. New bar and common room complex planned. Students organise numerous social events, including the famous bops, at least once a term. Open mic nights, karaoke, band nights and charity events also frequent fixtures, held in the bar or in the nearby Jericho pub.
Plentiful sporting opportunities of a standard which encourages everyone to participate, from the likes of the Mint Green Army football team, SAD (the darts team), extensive rowing possibilities and the ping pong team. Sport is just one aspect of a really lively college, which also has a joint orchestra with St John's, a drama society (STAge), a photography society and an active and influential JCR committee.
The workload is heavy but student and staff welfare and academic representatives are available if difficulties arise.
