Queen's - Student Life
Housing: All students can live in for the entirety of their course. Rents low for Oxford, average among the colleges.
Eats: Good selection at a subsidised price (lunch £1.50-£3.00, 2 course dinner £2.60). Breakfast and lunch are self-service.
Drink: Beer cellar has a wide variety at excellent prices (pint from £1.40, spirits from £1). Buttery also sells reasonably priced wine with dinner. Several good pubs close by.
Nightlife: Excellent JCR-organised entertainments, fewer university-wide events. Range of clubs from small and expensive (Escape, The Bridge, Thirst) to large, cheap and cheesy (Park End, The Studio, OFS). Live acts at The Zodiac on Cowley Road.
Locals: Generally friendly as city is largely populated by academic types or visiting students.
Sports: Excellent football, rugby, and cricket pitches over the river from the College's shared boathouse. Tennis and squash courts. 10 mins' walk to university's main sports complex. Darts and ultimate frisbee also popular.
Travel: Bus stops for local buses and park & ride as well as London services stop outside college main entrance. Train station 20 minute walk. Bicycle popular method of commuting around town.
Financial help: Jointly managed by JCR and college for those in severe financial difficulty. Further funds available from university.
Jobs: Permission must be sought for work during term time but some work is offered in College administrative roles.
Annual living costs: Estimated at £4000 for a student living in College accommodation, covering all living expenses excluding tuition fees.
Best features: Friendly atmosphere, central location, 3-4 years accommodation.
And worst: Variation in room size, no representation for students on Governing Body.
