Lincoln - Student View
Lincoln is a small, centrally located college with a very comfortable, friendly atmosphere. It accommodates all undergraduates for all of their college life and claims to serve the best food in the university (veggie too).
It is one of the oldest colleges with a striking library in the converted All Saints Church (open 7 nights a week) but the low-beamed, homely atmosphere of the bar holds more interest.
Lincoln students are a diverse bunch of individuals who participate in a multitude of activities on university, college and personal levels. Sports teams are enthusiastic and often successful. The emphasis is put on participation, and many teams achieve impressive results for a college of this size. The facilities are comprehensive, well looked after: main fields a 10-minute bike ride away; also boat club, squash court and well-equipped multi-gym. Darts board, pool table and table football in the college.
The non-sporting clubs and societies are wide ranging, from the incredibly successful choir, to running children's holiday camps. And, of course, socialising remains a common priority.
The JCR is apolitical as a whole; meetings are well attended and supplied with free drink and chocolate, making for an amusing atmosphere. It tries to be practical and conscientious, without being fanatical.
Academically, Lincoln is good to strong, even though work is not a sole occupation for the majority of undergraduates. The pressure applied by tutors is not excessive, except in needy cases. The hardship fund is excellent, and the college provides a high level of welfare for students; the drop-out rate is minimal.
Lincoln is a strong community, perfectly suited to the trials and excitement of an Oxford degree.
