Hertford - Student View

A famously friendly and informal college where everyone can find their niche. Enjoys a strong sense of college identity and a common commitment to hard work and play. Famously pleasant and unsnobbish atmosphere results from the very wide range of regional and social backgrounds and the legendary student bar - a winding cellar complex which forms the social focus of the college and is one of the few remaining student-run bars in the university.

The main college site is small but exceptionally well-situated, just 2 minutes from the town centre and 30 seconds from the Bodleian library.

Room sizes vary but all are comfortable and with network access; college prides itself on being able to offer accommodation to all undergraduates for the duration of their course.

Facilities include a TV/video games/pool room, a coffee bar with free tea and coffee, a gym, a computer room and washing facilities. Cooking facilities are limited but most eat in hall.

Well-stocked library, open 24 hrs, but most stumble across to the Sod. Academically very strong, particularly in geography, english and law. Workload varies but averages 1-2 essays and tutorials a week. Traditional tutorials still prevail but lectures are faculty-based and coursework growing in some subjects; teaching varies from the lively to the traditional.

Students are energetic, witty, sociable and dedicated. This is reflected in enthusiastic and successful participation in a variety of sports (Hertford football is traditionally fearsome) and the long-standing links with university journalism (several Hertford editors of Oxford Student and much involvement in the launch of radio station, Oxford Student Radio). Music society is very active and concerts are regular; dramatic society has also seen something of a renaissance recently.

Though generally politically laid-back, students have a thriving JCR and close ties with graduates and fellows. Much emphasis is placed on maintaining students' academic and social well-being (2 JCR welfare and women's officers); college nurse holds daily surgeries and there is an active and approachable chaplain.

Freshers' week is longer than at many other colleges, to allow new students more time to settle in.
