Christ Church - Student Life
Housing: Rooms in college for 1st and 2nd years - almost all excellent; singles and doubles, through to suite of 4 rooms per person. 3rd years in college accommodation on the Riley Road. Married flats available.
Eats: Food cheap, reasonable quality in hall (meal for £2+); also JCR cafe open all day on weekdays. Good health-food shop very close; many reasonable restaurants in town. Plenty of places in Covered Market and Little Clarendon Street, meal for £5+.
Drink: JCR prices two-thirds of town pubs (£1.50 a pint); half price cocktails at discos and other social events. Many popular pubs nearby, off-licence outside college; Oxford Union also good.
Nightlife: Regular college parties, DVD nights, social events. JCR has amusement machines, pool table, Sky TV, dartboard and table football. Good independent and commercial cinemas in town. Clubs cheesy but The Bridge and Po Na Na's good; much comedy, drama, LGB, bands etc.
Locals: Unfriendly (but mostly harmless!).
Sports: Excellent sports facilities 15 minutes on foot from college; also own weights room, squash court and other free facilities. Travel: Generous travel grants liberally distributed. Good student fares eg coach to London.
Financial help: Wide range, all advertised and accessible. Grants available from college/university by negotiation. Also residence grant money for study abroad.
Jobs: As a rule students don't get paid work during term. Grants available to discourage holiday jobs. Some summer work available in Oxford.
Annual living costs: The minimum amount students say you need to live on each year (covering all living expenses but excluding tuition fees) is £4500 (in college accommodation), £5500 (in private accommodation).
Best features: Community atmosphere, prestige, history, beauty.
And worst: Cost.
