Balliol - Student Life

Housing: In college in first and final year (heavily subsidised); some live in rented accommodation for 1 year, others in Jowett Walk - new self-catering accommodation owned by college.

Eats: Some kitchens for self-catering. Relaxed dining hall (no formal hall) matches general atmosphere. Choice of JCR pantry, particularly renowned for great breakfasts.

Drink: Student-run bar, cheap with friendly atmosphere.

Nightlife: Cheap and non-elitist summer event, regular ents (bops, DJs, pantos).

Sports: Largely a social activity but good football, rowing and cricket.

Financial help: 20 Balliol access bursaries awarded annually to most deserving cases; worth £1000 in first year, then £750 a year. Many other hardship funds such as maintenance grants, vacation residence, special projects and travel to US, Italy, Germany etc.

Jobs: Library invigilation and bar work during term. Long holidays to earn money.
