Founded: Founded 1861 (in Hull) as school of art, becoming first a polytechnic then a university in 1992.

Site: 3 in Lincoln. 1 in Hull 80 miles away. Brayford Pool Campus and Cathedral Campus both in Lincoln city centre. Riseholme Campus just to the north. Hull City Campus in city centre.

How to get there: To Lincoln: by train (2 hours from London Kings Cross); bus services from Newark and Retford; by road via A1 and A46/A57. Brayford Pool and Cathedral campuses both short walk from station; shuttle bus runs between 3 Lincoln sites. To Hull, by rail (2 hours to London Kings Cross). by road (M62). by air (Humberside Airport) or by ferry (daily crossings from Rotterdam and Zeebrugge).

Academic features: Applications encouraged from mature students without formal qualifications.

Annual expenditure on information provision, £42 per (FTE) student. 1200 PCs, all with free internet and email; ratio of 1:14 computers to students. IT skills courses available on request.

Other learning facilities: Language labs, photographic studios, broadcast-quality TV studios at Lincoln; video editing facilities, high-speed network at Hull.
