Loughborough University - Student Life
Housing: In halls (some married quarters). Many 2nd year students choose to live out - noticeboards, uni, word of mouth.
Eats: Hall of residence food plentiful. SU fast food outlets. Chinese, mexican, fast food, pizzas etc, pleasant piazza coffee bar. Meal on campus £3-£4. Town has plethora of restaurants and takeaways (student discounts available); curry and chinese houses popular. One vegetarian restaurant and a number of wholefood shops. Ashby Road filled with catering outlets. Good meal for £8 in Toby Carvery.
Drink: Good bars in SU building; regular drinks promotions, guest beers (£1.50 a pint, £1+ on event nights) and lots of soft drinks. Loads of student pubs in town: Vice-Versa and Orange Tree both funky and popular.
Nightlife: Brilliant in union - free bands every Thursday at SU (eg Dust Junkees, Ash); regular films, discos and top cabaret acts, nightclub with alternative nights. Drama on campus as well as in adjacent cities. In town, 3 student nightclubs (Pulse, Echoes, Discoteca), 6-screen cinema.
Locals: Very friendly, no problems. One local pub has no-student policy (which people respect).
Sports: Excellent facilities on campus - open to SU sports clubs members.
Travel: STA travel bureau in SU - variety of cheap tickets and holidays.
Financial help: Widely available; loans and grants and very good links between uni and SU. Subsidised nursery places.
Jobs: Casual jobs available in SU, as well as shop/bar work in town. SU Employment Exchange has plenty of jobs in range of places.
Best features: Unique student experience.
And worst: Too much to do and not enough time to do it! Good news: Hall bedrooms have phones and internet access.
Past students: Alastair Biggart (Channel Tunnel), Peter Bonfield (ICL), Rob Dickens (british photographic industry), Sebastian Coe, David Moorcroft, Christina Boxer, Danny Nightingale and Steve Scutt, Sue Shoblon, Forbes Robinson, Steve Backley, Bob Wilson and Paula Radcliffe, Ben Challenger, Chris Rawlinson, Fran Cotton.
