De Montfort University Leicester Campus - Student Life
Housing: New halls; student flats being built every year. Off-campus, hundreds of terraced houses (look on union noticeboards, housing agents).
Eats: Basic meal from £1.50+ on campus. SU food good, varied and cheap, as are takeouts in Narborough Road. Couple of local pubs do vegetarian and vegan food. Castle Rock Cafe (wicked baguettes); £10+ for 3-course meal at Que Pasa and Rum Runner (mexican, mediterranean and good fun); some good indian restaurants and kebab shops.
Drink: SU good and cheap (from £1.50 a pint). Favourite student pubs/clubs: The Princess Charlotte (live gigs every night, big names and free soup Sunday lunchtime); couple of Scream! pubs; loads of pubs and bars for all tastes nearby.
Nightlife: Bands on campus include Shed 7, Manson, Republica, Steps, Wheetus. Princess Charlotte 5 mins from SU on low key/indie/thrash/rock circuit. Several gay/mixed pubs and clubs.
Locals: Leicester people generally very friendly. As in every city, need to be aware/careful.
Sports: Uni sports centre - keep fit, step-aerobics etc and fitness suite. Aylestong leisure centre is nearest swimming pool.
Travel: Good local bus service. Midland Fox operates cheap student season tickets; NYS travel shop in SU.
Financial help: Small funds; uni hardship/access fund.
Jobs: Loads of pubs. Work in the SU (but waiting list can be anything from 1-6 months).
Buzz-words: DMU (De Montfort University), Narby (abbreviation of Narborough Road - the student area of the city), Scrappy (Scraptoft campus).
Best features: Student union - venue and evening entertainment.
And worst: Leicester's road system; sporting facilities aren't great; student apathy.
More info: Enquiries to SU Tel: 0116 255 5576.
Past students: Charles Dance, Gary Lineker.
