Housing: Listed buildings or halls of residence - all about £60 a week. Look on noticeboards, try agencies in town and word of mouth.
Eats: £2 for a meal on campus. Best bet is Tavistock Street for takeaways galore: great selection of multi-ethnic eating establishments. £5 for 2 courses at Wetherspoons.
Drink: 2 SU bars (pints from £1.40) and number of watering holes in Bedford catering for all tastes.
Nightlife: SU ents from cheese to karaoke, with tribute bands (eg Abba Gold). 2 clubs in town and a 'superclub' 10 miles away in MK.
Locals: Fairly friendly with many different ethnic groups.
Sports: Excellent facilities with superb gym and sports hall (at Alexander Sports Hall) and swimming pool on site. Off campus, Robinson Pool, hockey centre, athletics stadium and rugby club.
Travel: Local buses between sites. DMU shuttle bus runs every hour all day.
Financial help: Access and college funds; financial advice services.
Jobs: Bar shop and steward work in the SU; lifeguards and receptionists at university sports facilities; numerous bar/restaurant jobs in town.
Best features: Community spirit (being able to sing).
And worst: Small venues.
