Kent University - Student View
Canterbury a great campus, especially in the summer when the winds aren't blowing you off the hill! Beautiful, well-kept grounds, with amazing view overlooking the city and cathedral. Just out of town (20 minute walk down the hill) but on a bus route and plenty of taxis around. Security escort service available to all students 24hrs a day and free night bus either to town or surrounding areas.
Six computer rooms open 24hrs a day, and the library has long opening times (extended around exam periods). Relatively easy to change course during first term, depending on faculty and space available on new course. Job opportunities both on and off campus - jobshop helps students find work. Hardship funds available (lots of forms and all are interviewed).
Courses are varied and workload depends on course. Multi-cultural university (10% of students are Greek) but large number from London and the south/south-east.
Active students' union (6 full-time sabbatical officers), a nightclub on campus (the Venue), student advice centre, campus shop, jobshop, bars etc. 110 societies which cater for all tastes, including 34 sports clubs (good sporting facilities). Student nightlife focuses around the Venue and the other 6 campus bars - each has its own personality, all are friendly.
Pubs and bars in town are great and good variety. Nightclubs not so good - limited selection in town. Cinema and theatre in town; Gulbenkian theatre and films also shown on campus. Events continually put on by SU, eg Summer Ball; Winter Ball organised by RAG (Raising & Giving).
Housing in Canterbury not cheap and variable quality; list of vetted landlords and agencies available. Most students live off-campus in their second and third years. One of the best things is that it becomes a community - great college spirit and it is impossible to walk from one end of campus to the other without seeing people you know!
