Winchester University College - Student View

It's attractively situated on a hillside, 10 minutes' walk from Winchester city centre with picturesque views over fields. A combination of historic and modern buildings, the newest being the library, Black-Box Theatre, John Stripe lecture theatre and a new Student Union planned.

Workload reasonable to heavy, with continuous assessment in most courses; not hard to change courses in the first year. Exchanges available with Canada, USA, Europe, Japan. College accommodation for all first years (who apply in time) and some others.

Social life centres around the SU (especially for those based on campus), with nights ranging from cheese nights, live music, quizzes, promotions, stand-up comedy and much more. Wide range of pubs in Winchester, a couple of nightspots and a good shopping centre.

Southampton (12 miles away) is 20 mins by train, London an hour. Range of sports teams, compete locally and nationally. Regular student theatre productions and visiting companies.

SU active socially and politically; provides welfare advice, social and sporting amenities, student radio station The Voice, Big Fish Little Pond Magazine and an annual handbook for freshers. Also respected LGB society and other minority societies. Nursery places available for limited number. Students come mainly from the Midlands and South.

It is close-knit atmosphere, strong community spirit, safe environment and drop-out rate fairly low.
