Housing: Around 1000 rooms (some ensuite), good standard; some catered on meal card system. Private accommodation not easy; prices similar to London.

Drink: SU cheapest and largest venue; Guildhall Tavern and Greens very student friendly. Pub prices average to high.

Nightlife: Varied schedule, big event nights and 4 balls a year (Freshers'. Graduation, Christmas. Summer). Active events committee; SU performing arts company, abundant theatre groups. Good range of clubs and societies.

Sports: Mostly free, can get discount at town leisure centre and pool.

Travel: Regular bus service and many taxis but everything is in walking distance.

Hardship fund: Heavily in demand. Occasional short-term loans.

Jobs: Usually plenty (pubs, shops, restaurants, light industrial, SU), reasonable rates. Large number get paid part-time work; 70% get work in holidays.

Informal name: Winchester, Winch.

Buzzwords: JST (John Stripe Theatre); TP (Teaching Practice); BAPA (BA Performing Arts students); Bar End (Sports Ground).
