Southampton University - Student View

It's a quirky mix of campus and city university - a leafy haven just three miles from the main city centre. Grassy and attractive campus, home to a mixture of traditional red brick and modern architecturally-adventurous buildings, including the refurbished five-storey Hartley Library.

Medical sciences and arts are each about 8 minutes' walk from the main campus; oceanography and geology are based at a waterside campus in the city centre; also Winchester School of Arts (15 miles away) and New College.

Halls are all off-campus but in short walking distance (or a short bus trip on uni-link service). All first year students with unconditional offers are offered a place in halls (choice of self- or fully-catered); most are high quality, single study bedrooms, with shared cooking and bath facilities (many ensuite). Students are represented on all faculty boards, Students' Union committees and most university committees. For many years been the best place in Europe to study oceanography; also good for geography, computer science and aeronautical engineering.

Loads of bars and clubs, many with student nights. SU provides excellent range of services including a travel centre, shop, hairdresser, cafe and four bars; also home to the new Uniplex cinema and 1600 capacity nightclub. First-rate entertainments include live bands, comedy and club nights.

SU advice and information centre provides representation and advice for all students on issues from housing and course-related problems to debt management.
