Southampton Institute - Student View

It's mostly based at the main city centre campus; maritime courses (including naval cadets) are taught at Warsash campus, 10 miles away. Three main faculties: business, media arts and technology. Employment rate is good as most courses vocational, many incorporating a period abroad or in industry.

Library and IT facilities are open until 9pm (later around assignment hand-in dates) and at weekends. Most first years in halls of residence, 5 minutes' walk from campus; halls for second and third years are near train station; all are central but expensive. Large number of students from Hampshire area.

Students' Union building has three bars (top, middle and bottom bars), where most events happen, with food bars with pool tables and games. SISU runs many student events including DJs, bands, karaoke, quizzes, trips abroad, comedy nights etc, also four balls annually.

Over 50 SU-funded sports and societies, including basketball, hockey, Tae Kwon Do, Afro-Caribbean society; also SIN Radio, student magazine (HAVii), and website. SU actively encourages students to contribute and get involved. Good student scene, with lots of good, cheap local restaurants and student nights at clubs and pubs.
