Salford University - Student Life
Housing: University accommodation, 15 mins' walk of main campus, guaranteed for all 1st years; mixed housing, lively student village, some married quarters, en-suite and catered accommodation also available. SU has list of private accommodation (can work out cheaper but involves the hassle of utility bills).
Eats: Hot and cold snacks (eg paninis, pasties, burgers) all day in Lowry Bar. Meals in Pav Cafe 4-7 pm (plus all day for Sunday lunch).
Drink: 2 main bars: The Pav and the Lowry. Drinks relatively cheap and always drink promotions.
Nightlife: SU club nights (till 2 am). On the doorstep of Manchester city centre, good variety of cinemas, restaurants, pubs, clubs, theatres, concerts, comedy clubs and loads of students.
Locals: Pays to be vigilant, as with all big cities.
Sports: Union runs very cheap leisure centre (incl swimming pool, weights, sports hall, fitness centre, climbing wall, tennis/squash courts, five-a-side football pitches, trampoline, etc), automatic membership for gym/swim for those in uni accommodation.
Travel: Union travel bureau on campus; cheap air, train and coach fares.
Financial help: Access and hardship funds. Some interest-free loans from university.
Jobs: Work in union bars, ents (technical and promotion), library and Manchester; Job shop helps students find part-time or holiday work. Limited work in local industry.
Annual living costs: The minimum amount students say you need to live on each year (covering all living expenses but excluding tuition fees) is £5675 (in uni accommodation), £5350 (in private accommodation).
Best features: Leafy campus in heart of Manchester; friendly atmosphere.
And worst: Too much rain.
