London South Bank University - Student View

It's so close to central London it can be forgiven for being slap bang next to the grimy and ghastly Elephant & Castle shopping centre. In location terms, its greatest asset is the closeness of the West End since London is the coolest place to be right now.

Renowned Ministry of Sound is next door (but beware as it's pricey and not all it's cracked up to be) and The Coronet is close (venue which hosted Battle of the MCs).

Some excellent teaching staff and a diverse range of courses which include a degree in special effects (the only course of its kind in Europe) and a media course renowned for its high quality.

Campus accommodation offers four halls of residence: McLaren House, Dante Road, New Kent Road and David Bomberg House. With an average rent of £78 pw these are pretty decent considering the location. Accommodation office can help sort out cheaper digs.

The best thing about student life is the Student Union. Located on Keyworth Street (on campus) it houses the Tavern (a traditional pub-type bar) and the Isobar (a cafe and bar area which sometimes doubles up as a club venue). Drinks are cheap in both bars and there is always plenty to do. Sports play an important part in student life and athletic union is very active.

Many societies to join (or set up your own) including the african-caribbean, turkish, Mushroom Film and Christian Union. Two free SU publications, Li/ Scratch and Scratch The Mag students encouraged to flaunt their writing skills.

All in all, a unique experience with a very diverse range of students, particularly with regard to ethnicity.
