Housing: No halls of residence. Housing officer helps new students to meet and look for housing in groups. Look on the housing noticeboard, in Loot and similar free-ads papers. (NW3 is expensive, so students prefer NW6/10).

Eats: School canteen offers a huge menu for under £3 (and the 'full monty' for just £3.50). Finchley Road has many cafes and restaurants (about £6 for lunch).

Drink: School bar (from £1.60+ pint), Swiss Cottage pub and several excellent ones in Hampstead. And of course, there is London.

Nightlife: Students go free to all in-house performances. Local cinemas and many theatres - again this is London.

Locals: Generally friendly, with little problems in the area.

Sports: Many local gym and sport centres.

Travel: Some departments reimburse travel if course-related, eg teaching practice.

Financial help: Some funds available; crisis loan scheme for many applicants.

Informal names: CSSD or Central.

Best features: It's small.

Worst feature: It's small!!!
