Royal College of Art - Student View
Set in the heart of Kensington within walking distance of the museums - Victoria & Albert, Science and Natural History - its imposing 1960s architecture is a strange contrast to the surrounding Victorian splendour.
The RCA, as it is informally called, has an intense working environment. On a day-to-day basis, ideas are formulated and realised. At its best it is inspiring and fulfilling. Average age of students is 26, which adds to the maturity and vitality within the studios. It is a rare experience and high standards are expected and achieved. It's the only exclusively postgraduate college in the world offering both art and design education.
Well-funded and although bursaries are available to eligible students they don't fully cover the fees. Welfare office is very helpful, offering friendly, constructive advice on housing and money issues.
Students live in Battersea/Clapham, Shepherds Bush/Acton or East London. Bicycles are encouraged (and looking for secure storage on college premises).
The bar and RCAfe offer a vast range of entertainment and relaxation from debating and film societies, book club, chess, live bands, parties, whilst serving free trade coffee, infusions or the cheapest drinks in London.
Union area is the heart of the college where free speech reigns and student activity abundant. Run by graduates with art at the top of their agenda.
