Royal Academy Schools - Student View

In the West End, behind the Academy Gallery (entrance via Burlington Gardens). An independent college (not part of the 'system'), running the only full-time 3-year postgraduate course in the country. The Schools are focused on painting and sculpture (intake of approximately 15 painters, 3-4 sculptors a year), printmaking a related study.

Students encouraged to follow their own creativity. For first year painters there is an introductory study period where the importance of drawing is emphasised. Each student has a personal working space and personal tutor; also a limited choice, on majority vote, to invite staff of their choosing (a wide variety of visiting artists and tutors).

Being in central London, very good access to all the large galleries and many independent galleries, such as those in Cork Street a few moments away; possibilities for seeing all kinds of art work are vast. Free entrance to RA exhibitions including access to the main RA library and collections and opportunity to exhibit in main RA spaces. A small bar in the canteen and parties can be arranged. The RA Schools are basically a set of studio spaces with regular tutoring, but being a small institution it does not operate in the same way that other colleges do. As a result, students are not hampered by the machinations of a larger college or university and there is more room for student influence in the running of the school.
