London Film School - In Depth
Founded: 1956 as London School of Film Technique. Then (and still formally) London International Film School.
Site: Converted warehouse in Covent Garden.
How to get there: Covent Garden and many other tube stations; close to many bus routes.
Academic features: Writing drama for film scripts. Directing workshops. Practical sessions with actors. Courses begin each term. Time equally divided between practical film-making and formal tuition.
Special features: Acceptance depends upon educational achievement and examples of relevant work, eg photography, previous films, video, film scripts, story boards; experience in film, TV or related areas taken into account.
Awarding body: London Metropolitan University.
Main awards: MA Filmaking.
Length of courses: 2 years.
Library & information services: Technical books, periodicals, 17 study places. Other learning facilities: 2 viewing theatres, 2 fully equipped studios, video rehearsal studio, comprehensively equipped camera, sound and editing departments. Equipment includes 35 mm Panavision, 16 mm and 35 mm Arriflex cameras, 2 moviecam SuperAmericas, Nagra sound recorders, Steenbeck editing tables, Avid editing systems, video camera and editing equipment.
Study abroad: Opportunities exist to make films worldwide in the final term.
Careers: UK graduates are automatically acceptable as members of BECTU, with access to vacancy registers covering film and TV.
Student advice & services: Student services department, personal tutor system and national health services nearby.
Amenities: LFS Film Society run by students. SU plays large part in school.
Accommodation: No school accommodation. Privately owned accommodation varies considerably.
Living expenses budget: Minimum budget of £9000-£10,000 pa (excluding tuition fees) recommended by School.
Financial help: Scholarships for approx 5 UK students a year, covering tuition fees. Some students have Career Development Loans.
