London College of Fashion - Student View
Coming from a rich historical pedigree, LCF is spread across 6 central London sites in the fashion centres of the city - 3 in the West End around Oxford Street and 3 further east around the City and Hoxton.
The main college site, John Prince's Street, is close to Oxford Circus. It has a vibrant feel to it, a fantastic library and other specialist facilities (student support etc). The SU bar is a big feature at this site, with a futuristic feel and a popular balcony overlooking busy Oxford Street.
The other two West End sites, Davies Street and Barret Street, are both near Bond Street tube station: Davies Street is a very plush building, which it shares with central Arts University London facilities (so senior management see students regularly); Barret Street is a lifeless building with a small common room, tucked in a quiet street behind Selfridges.
The three sites in the City and Hoxton (Golden Lane and Curtain Road, either side of Old Street tube station) feel somewhat isolated from the rest of the college and social and resource facilities are somewhat scarce.
Most students are at the main site in John Prince's Street at least once a week. Students are mostly female, ages from 16 to 60 and a lot of international students. The teaching is very good and highly praised by most students. Not so with college catering; most students either bring their own food or go to local sandwich places.
SU maintains good relationship with staff and students; it has bar and office at John Prince's Street and visits the other sites as much as possible. Student services provide excellent help on jobs, hardship funds and other support eg counselling and accommodation. Few students live close to the college and most commute by public transport.
Informal name: LCF.
Past students: Harriet Jagger, Karen Kay, Karen Livermore (fashion editors); fashion buyers and fashion marketers.
