Brighton University - Student View
Brighton is a cosmopolitan town and growing more popular every year. Often called 'London by the sea' (and prices to match), it offers extraordinarily diverse socialising opportunities: huge array of clubs, pubs, shops, restaurants, parks and cinemas.
The beach is where people congregate in summer to sunbathe and watch the sun go down, and in winter you can opt for one of the many seaside pubs, clubs, cafes and the remaining glorious pier.
Brighton has typical levels of unemployment and homelessness and a small degree of racism and violence. But generally welcoming attitude towards diversity so many students stay in the area after graduation. With 2 universities and a technical college, it is very much oriented towards young people but with plenty to offer the large number of mature students.
Uni is based on four main campuses. Main campus, with 4000 students, is at Moulsecoomb: three buildings close together, 2 miles from the town centre: it includes busy JCR, offering students tea, coffee and range of hot and cold food; also SU offices including the advice centre, reception and shop.
Grand Parade campus is in the heart of Brighton: energetic part of the university, with 2 galleries and a theatre and some of the best and cheapest shows.
Falmer campus with recently re-built halls of residence is in a beautiful area with wonderful views: also playing fields and gyms for loads of sports; Falmer campus can be difficult for physically disabled students.
Eastbourne campus is 26 miles east of Brighton, based on various sites within walking distance of each other and the town centre; relatively small scale results in friendly atmosphere, with the centre of SU activity (shop and office) at the Bishopsbourne building.
Welkin site also includes halls, library and a day nursery; newly built sports complex and range of services. Nurseries on each campus; SU subsidises a few places for single parent students and runs half term playscheme for young children.
SU provides a wide range of services, including sports, clubs and societies, entertainments, food and drink, welfare campaigns, bars and a Southern African scholarship. Brighton is a truly amazing place, and needs visiting if nothing else. Try it - you'll love it!
