Cambridge St John's - Student View

Two main reasons for choosing St John's: it is a big and varied college; and it has fantastic resources to help you do whatever you want to do. Undergraduates come from many different backgrounds, and college structure makes it easy to get to know people from other years and courses.

A strong academic tradition but don't be put off; potential and willingness to learn, as well as what you can contribute to college, are more important. Impressive new library with excellent computing facilities and huge range of books (including all recommended texts).

College accommodation for 3 years, all with internet and phone connections. First years in single rooms (shared bathrooms and kitchens) so you're not stuck with someone you hate, but will have the chance to meet plenty of potential friends.

Whatever you enjoy, you should find your niche here. Emphasis on sport is fun and social; massive college interest and excellent facilities. Sports of all descriptions and all levels catered for: extensive pitches right behind college, squash and badminton courts, pool and snooker tables and newly renovated fitness room; well-equipped boathouse, so everyone from novice to boat race rowers can have a go.

Music Society is active, staging weekly recitals and orchestral concerts (practice rooms, grand piano, 2 concert venues in college). The chapel choir - and Chapel - has huge international reputation. The film society runs 2 (recent) films a week and the drama group, Lady Margaret Players, has its own theatre. Other societies cover a huge range of activities, but if none of them take your fancy then you can start your own!

The college bar is the social heart of the college, with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff along with the cosy JCR next door. Student-run club nights three times a term (great to let your hair down); smaller venue for less mainstream events. One of the most spectacular May Balls (lavish, black tie) and excellent June Event (less expensive alternative).

Food generally good (always a vegetarian option); Formal Hall is envy of Cambridge at £3 (bring a bottle). College also within staggering distance of anywhere, particularly the shops, pubs and eateries of central Cambridge. Plenty of financial help on offer (travel grants, cash for extra-curricular activities; hardship grants; book grants for all).

Situated in the centre of a beautiful town with amazing history and architecture, and a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, it's a great place to make your time as an undergraduate the best it can be.
