Cambridge Sidney Sussex - Student View

Small, co-residential college with pleasant architecture and gardens. Very central - within 5 minutes of almost all the city's clubs and right opposite Sainsbury's.

Accommodation is cheaper than university average but good quality and guaranteed for three years, either in college or in nearby house/hostel. All staircases have washing and catering facilities (though these vary); there is a laundry room. Hall serves three self-service meals a day (except Sundays) and optional formal supper (culinary standard variable, but student suggestions welcomed); reasonable choice provided, including vegetarian and choice of salads. Wide and popular range of extra-curricular activities in which anyone, no matter what standard, can participate.

Student-run bar doubles as a venue for fortnightly bops, jazz nights and bands; sports facilities include playing-fields and tennis courts (a mile away), a boathouse and squash court; a successful drama society, plus chapel choir and orchestra.

Academically, a gifted fellowship, very good library (open 24 hours/day) and good tripos results, especially in geography, law, and philosophy. Good relations with fellows - students enjoy full representation on governing body and other college committees.

Socially, very easy-going with few of the cliques found in other colleges; probably the friendliest college. A very fair admissions policy means no one should be discouraged from applying (college keen to obtain as many applicants as possible). Open days from Easter for sixth-formers. Thriving SU promotes student welfare and provides some focus for limited political debate and activity. Less political apathy than at other colleges.
