Cambridge Pembroke - Student View
A happy friendly community, easy-going in every way. Pleasant architecture and beautiful, well-maintained gardens; very central and well located for most subjects.
College provides accommodation for all - 1st years in college, remainder nearby in college-owned hostels. Standard variable but on the whole good; rents vary from very low to high for good rooms. Friendly porters, bedders and staff. Limited provision for married students.
Good food available on cafeteria basis, served formal hall available every night. Cooking facilities are limited. JP (Junior Parlour - college SU) active socially rather than politically.
Relations with college authorities and teaching staff very friendly; joint JP/college committee, numerous student/fellow contacts, both academic and social. Progressive admissions tutors who welcome applications from all backgrounds/ethnic groups. Undergraduates are friendly outgoing, and going places. Bike useful depending on subject/sporting interests.
Recently extended college library; refurbished bar; soundproof music rooms; good gym; video and TV rooms; party rooms; well-resourced computer rooms; college catered private functions; large sports ground. Sport is strong, particularly rowing, rugby, netball, and hockey. Also strong emphasis on drama and music opportunities.
Strong subjects: natural science, english, economics, engineering, SPS, anthropology - a nice mix. Changing subject fairly easy.
