Cambridge Newnham - Student View

One of the two remaining all-female colleges. The ivy-clad Victorian buildings are surrounded by gorgeous gardens, playing fields and countryside but with the city centre just 10 minutes' walk (or 5-min bike ride) away.

Academically strong in all disciplines, notably biological sciences, english and law. Old Laboratories in the college grounds (dating back to the time when women were not allowed to use the university lab facilities) have been converted into a performing arts studio, including music rooms and theatre equipment. Anonymous Players (drama soc) puts on sell-out productions each year after exams in college gardens.

College has a very supportive atmosphere and actively promotes opportunities for all, reflected in the state/independent school ratio and high intake of international students. Loads of societies college and uni wide for everything you could possibly want and more; Newnhamites are notoriously active in every area of college and university life, achieving in sports, music, drama and politics.

Funds are available for textbooks, travel and for students in financial difficulties. Excellent, brand new library is one of the biggest college libraries in Cambridge. Computer facilities are good; all rooms have internet and phone points and 2 computer rooms. Newly refurbished buttery has variety of food including vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher options. Corridor kitchens are well-equipped so self-catering possible. Security standards are high but rules are lenient; no gate hours and guests welcome.

College bar is cheap and has a pool table, footie table and juke box. Free ents every Friday in the bar. Glamorous Newnham Ball every two years in college grounds. Gardens are beautiful - small pond and fountain and not unknown for ducks to visit - even deer.

Atmosphere is friendly and Newnham is proud of its diversity. Courses are demanding but attitude is, notoriously, work hard, play harder.
