Founded: 1871, as a women's college.

Admission: Women only, mainly on A-level grades or equivalent and interviews. STEP in maths only.

Scholarships: Prizes awarded for outstanding performance in university exams.

Travel & book grants: Generous funds available.

Academic features: All university subjects offered except education.

Study abroad: Formal exchange links with some universities.

Library & information service: 85,000 volumes, 6000 antiquarian books. New library building with excellent IT facilities, networked to database search facilities. Separate IT service, access 24 hours/day; network connections to all student rooms. IT support from 2 full-time and 1 part-time computer officers.

Eating arrangements: Buttery for cafeteria service, and hall for formal dinners (cash or charged to college bill). Guests welcome. Good kitchens.

Other college facilities: Two large computer centres; bar, student common rooms; washing machines; performing arts centre with grand piano and full stage lighting; practice rooms with pianos; art room; multi-gym, playing fields and tennis courts on site in large college grounds; punt hire scheme in summer.

Accommodation: Available in college for all undergraduates for 3 years: £730 for 10-week term includes heating, kitchen facilities and catering contribution.

Term-time work: Term-time work discouraged (as terms are short and very intense, and a number of grants available for those in financial difficulties); jobs of over 6 hours a week only with tutor's agreement. Some part-time work available in college bar, library, waitressing and with admissions events.

Financial help: Bursaries of £1000 (via the Newton Trust) for all students on full student support. Approx 50 college bursaries (£250-£1000) for those in special need, and a general hardship/emergency fund. Students also eligible for generous help from central university hardship funds.
