Cambridge King's - In Depth

Founded: 1441: women undergraduates first admitted 1972.

Admission: Great majority by conditional pre A-level offers; post A-level applicants with high exam grades. Undergraduates not admitted for veterinary science. Encourages applicants from all backgrounds and kinds of school and, by interviewing almost every candidate, attempts to assess potential rather than examination performance.

Scholarships: Choral scholarships and organ studentships awarded at entrance; academic scholarships also awarded on university examinations.

Travel grants: Many undergraduates awarded travel grants (up to £400), usually for second year summer vacation.

Library & information service: 110,000 volumes: extensive music section. Record library.

Eating arrangements: Self-service cafeteria. Standing charge covers kitchen overheads, individual meals are paid for.

Gate/guest hours: None.

Other college facilities: 2 bars, launderette, darkroom, arts centre, computer room, film projection room, picture loan collection, croquet garden, punts, sports grounds. No compulsory gowns or formal meals.

Accommodation: Almost all students in college accommodation (around 2% live out by choice): £500-£839 incl heating per term room only (mostly study bedrooms, some sets). No first degree students live at home.

Term-time work: College does not allow term-time work.

Financial help: General funds, as well as funds to help mature students, those with children or in non-college accommodation, around 250 students helped per year. Some funds available for research students prior to course.
