Cambridge Gonville & Caius - Student Life

Housing: All students in college accommodation, 85% of which is excellent. Rents average £67 per week (but for only 30 weeks). Married quarters; some rooms with disabled access.

Eats: College caters for all diets although dinner can be expensive (£4.50), but quality is improving. Good vegetarian restaurants and health food shops in town; masses of choice (decent meal £8, cheaper alternatives £3).

Drink: Bitter £2 pint in college bar. Nice old pubs in town (though some now trendy wine bars). Local Wetherspoons, Rat and Parrot for cheap drinks etc. Local club (Life), £1 a pint on student night, very popular.

Nightlife: Frequent (cheap) college bops (£1 most drinks) and other events. Thriving drama society; regular concerts and plays. Art Cinema in town is excellent; also a mainstream cinema. Life, Cindies, Fez, Po Na Na's, COCO all good, cheap student clubs.

Sports: Excellent sports ground with clubhouse (best sports bar in Cambridge) and squash and tennis courts. Standard generally good but opportunities for all abilities.

Travel: Get a bike and you're sorted! Approximately £8 return to London (coach) and regular trains around the country.

Financial help: Ever-increasing grants and bursaries. All students get a £40 book grant. Relatively easy to get a travel grant. Isaac Newton Bursary scheme for those on full LEA support.

Jobs: Students allowed to stay in accommodation outside term-time (especially for academic reasons) but most find work closer to home.

Informal name: Caius (pronounced Keys).

Best feature: Size and facilities means atmosphere is friendly.

And worst: College regulations!
