Cambridge Gonville & Caius - In Depth

Founded: 1348; women undergraduates first admitted in 1970s.

Admission: High proportion of places offered to candidates with GCE and scottish qualifications but places also offered to students with IB, EB or overseas qualifications. Those wishing to study maths often asked for 1 or 2 subjects at STEP.

Academic features: Teaching fellows in all subjects except education, geography, veterinary medicine, land economy. French and german lector in addition to modern languages teaching fellows.

Scholarships: Unlimited scholarships and exhibitions for exceptional performance in university examinations.

Travel grants: Numerous minor travel grants plus Paton-Taylor travelling scholarship for projects of an academic nature; awards from Leonard Gluckstein Memorial Fund for travel associated with historical or archaeological studies; grants from Handson Bequest for medical projects.

Library & information service: College library contains collection of modern books (4500 new acquisitions per year); also a large medieval collection in university and various collections bequeathed by Fellows. IT and library services converged. Ratio of 1:13 workstations to students, access 24 hours/day; 60 points with access to library and internet (plus 250 in students' rooms). IT support from 3 computer officers.

Eating arrangements: Self-service breakfast and lunch; undergraduates encouraged to dine in hall as often as possible and there is minimum dining requirement.

Gate/guest hours: No restrictions.

Other college facilities: Music practice rooms; college boathouse and boatman; cricket pitch; sports ground and pavilion; squash court; health centre; auditorium; 2 computer centres and 3 out-stations.

Accommodation: All students in college accommodation, average rent £65 per week inclusive. No first degree students live at home.

Term-time work: No college policy on term-time work. Occasional vac work available in college library.

Financial help: College bursaries to £900; no limit to number awarded (approx 50). Additional hardship funds available if required (up to £3000 awarded in one or two recent cases). International students eligible for overseas bursaries (for maintenance or fees), maximum around £3000. Scholarship schemes for students from New Zealand, Argentina, Malawi and other developing countries.
