Cambridge Girton - Student View

Set in pleasant, extensive grounds about 2 1/2 miles from city centre (most find a bike essential). It has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

College accommodation for all: Wolfson Court (housing 140) is modern and includes a law library, reading room and computer room complex; several college houses, most undergraduate housing next to college. Fixed rent for all rooms regardless of size. Food quite cheap and good - several choices, including salads and vegetarian meals (vegan on request). Self-catering facilities on each corridor and coin-operated washing machines.

Large, extensive library with convenient opening hours. Workloads realistic and, despite traditional atmosphere of degrees, interesting and unpressurised. Academic standards average and it's fairly easy to change subjects. Good relations between senior and junior college members.

Intake is mixed: male/female ratio nearly equal; strong international contingent; varied educational and home backgrounds; down-to-earth and unpretentious.

College societies range from subject-related to music, drama and film club; there is a well-equipped darkroom.

Good sports facilities on site for hockey, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, netball, rugby, soccer, squash, cricket, croquet; also heated indoor swimming pool (water polo), multigym and a successful rowing club.

Lively, busy bar in atmospheric college cellars (with pool table, darts board, table football, jukebox, etc) - also it's cheap and with unique barman. Party rooms, TV room; JCR hires out discotheque and organises the garden party, spring ball as well as band nights and discos.

All rooms, facilities, library, bar etc contained within one building. Front gate locked at 2 am but porter always on duty. Security keys can get you into college too, and be used as a charge-up card for use in the canteen. JCR bikes available for students; infrequent buses (£1).
