Housing: All live in; no married quarters but houses close by.

Eats: Best eating places in town on Castle Hill: several indian restaurants and Dojo's serves good (inexpensive) chinese food. College meals about £1.20-£1.50, vegetarian available.

Drink: Guinness, Carlsberg Export, Stella, Tetleys - good selection of bottled beers in college bar from £1.60 a pint. Other college bars (have to know people in a college to drink in its bar) and Girton village pub; also The Anchor, Mitre, Pickerel and The Castle.

Nightlife: Local bands in college bars - some more famous play in Corn Exchange (fairly expensive); film, bop, band or other ents (eg bingo, generation game) each week in college. Also ADC Theatre. Arts Theatre. Good ents in Clare Cellars, Emma bar, Queens; also Fez Club and Po Na Na.

Locals: Friendly to students who are friendly.

Sports: Good facilities; new astroturf cricket nets.

Travel: Bikes essential. Bus frequent but not always regular. Taxi to town £6. Travel grants available for summer vacation.

Financial help: Hardship funds. Can pay bill in instalments.

Jobs: Some work in college kitchens and development office - otherwise not officially allowed during term-time - temping possible in holidays.

Best features: Friendly atmosphere; inexpensive.

And worst: Small town so social life is whatever you make of it
