Cambridge Emmanuel - Student View
Famous for its ducks, outside swimming pool and exceptionally cheap and funky student-run bar, Emma has a reputation for being friendly and unpretentious.
Accommodation provided for every student for the duration of their course, rooms varying in price and size. Free laundry service is unique to Emma and the envy of every other college.
Hall food is pretty good; very social (especially on Sunday mornings when everyone goes to Brunch to read the papers and catch up on the week's gossip!). Self-catering facilities not so extensive.
College has 24-hour computer and library facilities and all college rooms connected to university intranet. Students Union (ECSU) is politically and socially active and the ents team puts on regular music nights in college bar.
Infamous Funk-da-Bar and Indie-in-da-Bar draw students from across the university but twice-termly bar extensions are the preserve of Emma students. Bi-annual May Ball is a decadent and extravagant all night affair.
Excellent access record, so that students come from a wide range of private and state school backgrounds. College has employed a schools liaison officer whose role is to increase aspirations of A-level students and encourage them to consider applying to Cambridge. Male-female ratio about 50:50 most years (and female students get some of the best results in the university).
College environment means you are well looked after: a director of studies cares for you academically and your personal tutor deals with any welfare or financial issues. A College Family system operates during the first few weeks of the year to help Freshers settle in. Don't let the fact that it is top of the Tompkins table deter you from applying: Emma students do work hard but they also love to play hard and squeeze every drop out of their time there.
College ethos is that University is about more than just getting a degree!
