Cambridge Downing - Student View

Just off the main tourist trail through Cambridge, next door to the major science sites, and a short walk from the arts faculties. Members of Downing enthuse about its sense of space - leafy site and outstanding range of classical-style buildings.

Recent investment programme resulted in a new library, computer room, ensuite accommodation and new bar and common room. All undergraduates live in college accommodation.

Strong academically in all areas but particular reputation in law, medicine and natural sciences. Modern computer facilities are available.

Its sporting reputation lives on, with recent victories in both men's and women's university rowing, football and rugby. Emphasis on fun participation and there is a down-to-earth approach which keeps the friendly atmosphere and strong sense of team spirit.

High-profile JCR is largely non-political and concentrates on student welfare; it has a good relationship with the college authorities and representation on all relevant governing committees.

The student-run bar (one of the cheapest in town) is in itself something of a tourist attraction, especially at the end of term. Successful May week events (guest sets by top DJs); weekly ents with a variety of styles from aspiring student DJs (indie to rare groove and breakbeat).

A club or society for most enthusiasms; music and drama societies especially active, and also the choir (has toured all over the world). Downing students get involved in a wide range of activities throughout the university, from Footlights (comedy), drama, films and photography, to every kind of sport. But with a membership of just under 400, many people still choose to finish the evening with their friends in the late-night bar.
