Cambridge Churchill - Student View
Renowned as one of the most progressive Cambridge colleges, it has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students from all areas of the country; international students well represented and large majority of state school students.
A medium-sized college, so easy to fit in without getting lost in the crowd. Strong science bias but arts alive and kicking. Founded in 1960, the modern architecture ensures that rooms are light and airy with up-to-date facilities; college attitude to students helpful and friendly - very few rules. Dining hall serves a wide range of decent food (including salads, sandwiches and caters for specific dietary requirements). Kitchen between every ten or so students with adequate cooking facilities; internet and phone connections in all college rooms.
Large on-site playing fields, tennis and squash courts and a multi-gym. Easy to get involved; both women's and men's sports teams include football, hockey, rugby, cricket, and many more. Superb music facilities including a recital room, several practice rooms and recording equipment. Large air-conditioned lecture theatre-cumcinema shows 2 films a week.
Bar is large and can get quite crowded; free disco every Friday night. Active SU, represents students on college committees, provides welfare services and looks after the Sky TV and games room. College magazine (Winston) is biggest in the uni and the Cambridge University radio is based in college.
Excellent library (open 24 hours) caters well for most subjects; librarian very willing to fill any gaps. 4 computer rooms; computers frequently updated. Free computing and language courses (french, german, russian, japanese and chinese) available.
Although 15-20 minutes' walk from town centre, not as isolated as many would have you believe; free taxi service back from town if left stranded in an emergency after dark. The guaranteed accommodation and the fact that everything is on site make up for the distance from town - and new maths faculty is next door.
Lively and sociable, Churchill makes for a very enjoyable three years.
