Cambridge Churchill - In Depth

Founded: 1960; women undergraduates first admitted 1972.

Admission: Conditional offers: usually AAA for both arts and science courses. For science courses, conditional offers may include grades in STEP and/or AEA papers. Undergraduates not admitted for land economy or theology.

Academic features: ICT courses; modern language courses for non-linguists. Churchill Archive Centre: 20th-century british history.

Study abroad: 4% of students learn a language as part of their course and spend 6 months or more abroad. Formal exchange links in Paris and MIT for some science and engineering students.

Travel grants: Small long vacation travel fund.

Library & information service: Undergraduate library open 24 hours a day. Books in greatest demand lent for limited period only. IT services open 24 hours/day (ratio workstations to students 1:11). 30 PC workstations and 5 Apple Macs for student use, 2 OPAC for accessing the university library, 2 for accessing the college library, 1 laptop with LAN access; ethernet and telephone connections in all student rooms. IT support from 3 full-time, 2 part-time staff.

Eating arrangements: All meals self-service plus formal dinner.
Vegetarian available.

Gate/guest hours: None.

Other college facilities: Buttery, bar, theatre; multi-gym; extensive playing fields; tennis and squash courts within college grounds; boathouse (rowing); music recital and practice rooms; visual arts studio. Late night taxi service to provide safe travel back to college at college expense.

Accommodation: All students in college accommodation for 3 years (modern bedsitting rooms, 36% ensuite). 430 places available: £423-£949 for 10-week term (most around £589) plus meals at subsidised prices. No first degree students live at home.

Term-time work: Term-time work strongly discouraged. Some vacation work available in college and help offered in finding gap year and vacation work out of college.

Financial help: £35,000 own funds, used to help 40 students encountering financial hardship.
