Choosing a Course

If you want to do anatomy, there is a limited number of institutions to choose from, and these are usually to be the older universities. The good news is that tends to make for a friendlier, more personal environment. Anatomy can be studied in its own right, or combined with subjects such as developmental biology, biomedical science, or cellular biology. It may also be included as an option in some biological science or human biology courses.

Physiology is rather more widely offered. Some courses allow for focus on humans, mammals, or areas such as neuroscience, so investigate the possibilities thoroughly. Physiology courses will vary from department to department: there may be focus on how individual organs or tissues work, or on complete systems. Alternatively, you might study how systems interact or how life functions at the cellular level. Where courses do vary is in the degree of modularisation, or how much of a free hand you are given to bolt together your own physiology degree.
