Savings for Students
Being a student is an expensive business, and making the most of the savings available out there can help you to reduce your outgoings, and minimise the amount of debt you incur during your time as a student. It can also allow you to have a social life without that socialising costing you a fortune.
Socialising cheaply
Make use of your NUS card and ask if the place you are going offers a student discount. Look online for discount vouchers and codes that you can take along for things like cinema trips, eating out, and other offers. Look for group discounts on things like bowling and paintballing, and get together with your mates so you can all enjoy a day out more cheaply. Make use of offers like Orange's 'Orange Wednesday' when going to the cinema, and look online at sites that can offer you free tickets to screenings of new films.
Shop savvy
When you need to shop for things, whether it be food, clothes, or course materials, be savvy about where you look and how you pay. Again look out for stores online and off that offer discounts to students, and make use of these. Think about buying some items second hand, many students sell off items when they are leaving University, so keep your eye on student notice boards and take advantage of charity shops.
Take advantage of 2 for 1 deals by going shopping with a friend who has similar tastes to you. This way you can get what you want for half price rather than having to over fill your cupboards.
Ask!
Some places may not advertise that they offer a student discount, but, if you shop there, it's worth asking them, you might be instrumental in not only saving yourself money, but in saving other people money too as they may be quite happy to offer a discount to students who show them proof of being a student.
Get an NUS Extra Card
The NUS Extra card is a card which you buy. The cost is small however, and there are a lot of places who offer discounts to people carrying this card. You can find out more about it on the NUS website here: www.nus.org.uk/nus-extra Places such as McDonalds, JJB Sport, Amazon.co.uk, Superdrug, Orange and Halfords all offer discounts via this scheme, plus of course many more stores.
